| Understanding Headache | | | | | | | Tom Zeller’s new book, “The Headache,” sheds light on an agonizing ailment and examines the state of headache research — although, as Zeller notes, “Anything involving the brain or central nervous system is incredibly hard to study.” | | | | Ten years later, LIGO is a black-hole hunting machine LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA celebrate the anniversary of the first detection of gravitational waves and announce verification of Stephen Hawking’s black hole area theorem. | | | | | | | | Locally produced proteins help mitochondria function Researchers developed an approach to study where proteins get made, and characterized proteins produced near mitochondria, gaining potential insights into mitochondrial function and disease. | | | | | | | | Lincoln Laboratory technologies win seven R&D 100 Awards for 2025 Inventions that protect U.S. service members, advance computing, and enhance communications are recognized among the year’s most significant new products. | | | | | | | | We’ve glimpsed the secret quantum landscape inside all matter // New Scientist MIT researchers developed the first full map of the quantum landscape that constrains how electrons move inside matter. The map “offers a new way to understand and design materials, perhaps leading to, for instance, super-efficient wires that conduct electricity with no resistance. A new view of what actually happens inside materials is bound to lead to new ways to improve them.” | | | | | | | | | Walking around the MIT campus, you might come across a plaque marking Danny Lewin Square at the corner of Main and Vassar Streets. The honor commemorates Danny Lewin SM ’98, who was one of nearly 3,000 people who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Lewin was killed onboard American Airlines Flight 11, and is credited with trying to stop the plane from crashing into the World Trade Center. Although his life was cut short at 31, Lewin made an indelible mark on the field of computer science. He was co-founder of Akamai Technologies and a doctoral candidate at MIT at the time of his death. In 2017, Lewin and his Akamai cofounder, MIT Professor Tom Leighton, were inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for applying algorithms to solve web congestion. “He was a very, very bright fellow, and a great leader, inspirational fellow, and really a unique human being,” Leighton told MIT News in 2011. “Anyone that extraordinary when they’re lost you never replace that.” | | This edition of the MIT Daily was brought to you by tango at the ’Tute. 💃🏽 Thanks for reading, and enjoy your day! —MIT News | | | |
